How Do Solar Panels Help Save Water in Northern Virginia Communities?

This article discusses how solar panels help save water in Northern Virginia communities.

As stated by the International Energy Agency, energy supply accounts for almost 10% of global water withdrawals yearly. In contrast to other modern means of producing electricity, solar panels don’t consume water in the same capacity. Energy choices, in general, have big consequences for water usage. Water is used to generate energy in power plants or even to extract, process, and transport fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. This article discusses how solar panels help save water in Northern Virginia communities.

No Water is Required to Produce Power

Most conventional power plants must consume tons of water to cool themselves off. For instance, U.S. power plants were accountable for 45% of total water withdrawals in 2010. That is quite a lot of water just to generate some power. In contrast, solar panels require no water for cooling and are much more ecofriendly.

When fossil fuels are extracted and processed, a large amount of water is used. Fossil fuel businesses drilling for natural gas and oil often have to inject high-pressure liquid into wells to “fracture” underground rocks. This allows the fuel to be extracted. The fluid is mostly water, known as “hydraulic fracturing,” or fracking. After that, even more water is required for refining and transportation. Additionally, fracking is considered harmful for multiple reasons, but it certainly is not great for how we consume water either.

Floating Solar Panels Can Diminish Evaporation

There are more floating solar farms than ever, known as “floatovoltaics.” These solar panel-covered rafts are placed in reservoirs and large bodies of water near Northern Virginia and beyond to boost clean power without consuming valuable land. They also minimize evaporation for some bodies of water and enhance ecosystem health by regulating algal growth.

Enhances Energy Efficiency

Many water facilities in Northern Virginia are starting to install solar panels. This permits more efficient energy use, which helps save water. Solar panels aren’t just crucial for electricity usage—they help communities save water as well!
