At some point, solar panels do begin to fail, and it’s crucial that we know what happens to those solar panels.
What is great about solar panels is that they are created with longevity in mind; not only do they have an expected lifetime of 30+ years, but they are also made to withstand the elements. In addition, most solar panels in the world weren’t installed until after 2009, when the industry experienced a boom. This means that many solar panels still have a significant amount of life left in them. At some point, solar panels do begin to fail, and it’s crucial that we know what happens to those solar panels.
What Are Solar Panels Made Of?
To understand what we do with inactive solar panels, we first need to know what they are made of. Typical solar panels are made with crystalline silicon solar cells. These solar cells are linked together with inside electrical contacts stored within an aluminum-framed, glass-topped panel. What’s great about this is that many of these elements can be recycled. This lends to the credibility that solar panels are better options for the environment.
Concerns About Toxicity and Its Environmental Impact
Most silicon solar cells have a negligible amount of toxic chemicals. The exams done have demonstrated that the levels of toxic chemicals are below the standards set forth by the EPA, so one shouldn’t worry about any toxicity in solar cells. Consequently, there’s no need to throw away solar panels as much of the valuable materials within them can be recaptured. This is why the solar industry has positioned itself to recycle panels, allowing for the reuse or reselling of their components.
The Process of Recycling Solar Panels
There are two ways to recycle solar panels.
- The first step is to disassemble the panels entirely, allowing for the reuse of 100% of the metal involved and the majority of the glass and silicon.
- Shredding the panels is another option, although not as effective in what is rendered reusable, which allows the job to be done much quicker.
In either case though, the components that make up a solar panel will continue to contribute to a better tomorrow where energy is clean and recyclability is a priority.
