4 Easy Tips for Cutting Down Your Daily Energy Use

Energy Use

Worried about your daily energy use? There are some easy tricks to cut down on waste.

There’s an unfortunate association that many people have between living green and denying yourself of basic pleasures—going green means you can’t buy the car you want, or have the diet you enjoy, or have the home that works for you. The reality is, a lot of us can make some very simple, small changes that help cut down on your home’s energy use. If you have a desire to reduce your overall energy use, thereby cutting down on your utility bills and doing the environment a small favor, there are a few easy ways you can do so.

1. Take Advantage of Natural Sunlight

Depending on the season, your blinds and curtains can leave an impact on your bills. During the winter, take the time to crack open all your blinds and let that natural sunlight shine on in. This will keep your home a bit warm. Conversely, keeping your windows covered during the summer will prevent you from having to crank up the air conditioning and make your home just a tad bit cooler.

2. Unplug Electronics When Not in Use

People who are really concerned about energy use sometimes refer to electrical devices that still draw power even when turned off as “energy vampires.” The reality is, most devices draw some amount of energy even when not in use. Most of the time, the impact left by these devices is somewhat negligible, but if you know you’re going to be out of town for a while, it’s worth it to go around and unplug everything.

3. Keep Your Air Conditioner Maintained

Heating and cooling often accounts for a lot of our regular energy use. If you let your air conditioner start to get dirty and don’t perform fairly regular maintenance, it’ll start to drag down your energy efficiency. Clean or replace any dirty filters and make sure vents are clean as well. If your system has a condenser, which is the part that’s outside of your home, make sure it isn’t being clogged by leaves or dirt.

4. Thinking Thermostats

Take some time to experiment with your thermostat and see what works for you. Many of us tend to be creatures of habit who always do the same thing, but you might be able to turn the heat down a bit in the winter—or the cooling up a bit in the summer—without really feeling the effects. It’s always worth experimenting with and seeing what’s really comfortable for you.
